Action and fighting game templates
These templates are all combat, and they disagree about the hit: whether it moves someone off a stage, opens a combo, clears a street, or only has to be survived.

The hit has a job
In an arena brawler the attack exists to move a body off a platform. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Bandai Namco and Sora, 2018) spends a huge roster on that. Brawlhalla (Blue Mammoth Games, 2017) gets it from a short move list. If a light hit and a heavy hit ring someone out the same way, you do not have this yet.
A fighting game uses the hit to win a moment. Street Fighter 6 (Capcom, 2023) wants space. Guilty Gear Strive (Arc System Works, 2021) wants one confirmed hit to become the rest of the round. The template gives you a punch, a kick and a block so you cannot hide inside a move list.
A beat 'em up walks into a street, meets one enemy type, and leaves when it is empty. Streets of Rage 4 (Dotemu, Lizardcube and Guard Crush, 2020) is still that block. A hack and slash cares that the swing is wider than one body and that something drops, which is Diablo IV (Blizzard Entertainment, 2023) and, differently, Hades (Supergiant Games, 2020). A musou pushes until the soldiers are scenery. Dynasty Warriors 9 (Omega Force, 2018) only works when one sweep clears an area. Tough soldiers turn it into another template.
A dodge with a cost
Character action scores how the hit looked. Devil May Cry 5 (Capcom, 2019) is a style rank on a light-heavy string and a dodge. A spectacle fighter asks for one more thing: the enemy has to leave the ground, as in Bayonetta (PlatinumGames, 2009). A soulslike refuses the flourish. Dark Souls (FromSoftware, 2011) gives you one enemy, two readable attacks, stamina, and a walk back from the checkpoint. If the dodge is free, you built the other template.
A survivors-like opts out of aiming. Vampire Survivors (poncle, 2022) lets you move while the weapon fires. Change how fast the wave grows before you add a combo.
