Godot AI: what actually works in 2026, and what does not
By Eduardo Orellana · Updated
Flockbay is free on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan. Claude Pro or Max, or ChatGPT Plus or higher, builds a real Godot project in the Godot editor. Claude Free and ChatGPT Free do not run here. More models are optional, a credit reload at API prices. Godot AI means using an AI model to make a Godot game: a coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor working on your project, an assistant inside the Godot editor, or an MCP server that lets the agent run the game and look at it. Godot itself ships none of these. What makes any of them work is the same thing: a model that can see the game and check its own work.
TL;DR. As of 29 Sep 2026, Godot 4.7 ships no AI of its own, and the Godot Foundation's 30 Jun 2026 policy bans substantial AI-written code in contributions to the engine, not in games made with it. The Godot AI that works best lets the model run the game, look at it and read its errors. Flockbay is a free AI game maker built on Godot: its AI, or your own agent over MCP, builds a real Godot 4 project you can open, read and change, and its builder sits around the Godot editor's own view.
Why generic AI on Godot underdelivers
Pointing a language model at a Godot project is easy and mostly disappointing. Ask a general-purpose model for GDScript and you will get GDScript. It will often compile. What it will not do reliably is fit the scene you actually have, because the model cannot see the scene. It is guessing at your node names, your signals, your project layout, and it is guessing from training data that mixes three major versions of Godot together: yield where Godot 4 wants await, KinematicBody where Godot 4 says CharacterBody3D.
So the failure mode is not gibberish. It is plausible code that references a node that does not exist, in the style of an engine version you are not running. You then spend the afternoon debugging code you did not write, which is a worse afternoon than writing it yourself.
The problem is not model quality. It is that the model is working blind. Every fix that starts with "use a bigger model" is treating the symptom.

Godot AI comes in five shapes, and each fails differently
Chat assistants. You paste code into ChatGPT or Claude and paste the answer back. It sees only what you pasted, so it guesses at the rest of the project.
Coding agents on the project. Claude Code, Codex or Cursor open your project folder and edit the .gd and .tscn files directly. They see the whole project, but not the running game.
Assistants inside the editor. Ziva and AI Assistant Hub are Godot plugins with a chat in the editor. They see what the editor sees.
MCP servers. A plugin or a program that gives an outside agent tools inside Godot: run the game, read the errors, and in the better ones take pictures and play input. Coding-Solo's godot-mcp, godot-ai, GDAI MCP and Godot MCP Pro are the best known.
Apps built on Godot. Flockbay and Summer Engine are downloads with an engine inside and an AI that builds in it. Flockbay bundles the official Godot 4.7.2; Summer describes its engine as compatible with Godot 4.
They are less rivals than layers. A coding agent gets far better with an MCP server under it, and an app like Flockbay is, among other things, an MCP server for your agent.

Godot AI with a coding agent reads files, not scenes
A Godot project is text. Scenes are .tscn files, scripts are .gd files, and project.godot holds the settings. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can read all of it and write to it, and for code-heavy work, a state machine, an inventory, a save system, that is often enough.
What the agent cannot do from the files alone is see the game. It cannot tell that the camera clips through a wall or that the jump floats. If Godot is installed it can run it from a terminal and read what it prints, which catches crashes, not feel.
Two habits save you. Commit before every session. And do not leave unsaved changes to a scene in the Godot editor while the agent rewrites the same file, or your next save puts your version back over the agent's.
The details per agent: making games from Claude Code, making games in Codex and Cursor for Godot.
Godot AI in the editor: a chat panel, or tools around the view
The editor is where Godot developers already live, so AI moved in. Ziva is an agent inside the Godot editor, 4.2 and later, that edits scenes and scripts, writes GDScript and C#, and reads editor errors; its free Hobby plan includes $3 of AI use a month, and Basic, Pro and Ultra cost $20, $50 and $200 a month. AI Assistant Hub, a plugin on GitHub, embeds assistants that read and write code in Godot's script editor.
Flockbay moves into the editor too, differently. Open a game in Flockbay and the Godot editor opens with it: Flockbay's chat sits in a dock, and the builder is a set of buttons around the editor's own 3D and 2D view. In a 3D world they are Select, Sculpt, Paint, Plants, Place, Water, Sky, Weather, Characters, People and Camera. In a 2D world they are Select, Paint, Place and Characters.
The builder is there because some things are faster to drag than to describe. You shape a hillside with the mouse, paint grass where you want it, drop a tree and nudge it. Each change is one step in the editor's own undo and is saved into your game as you go, and you move around the way you already do in Godot. The Game screen only plays.
That turns the usual idea of AI in the editor around. The assistant does not only write code for you to paste into the editor. The AI and the buttons change the same world, the AI through its world tools and you with the mouse, wherever a sentence is the wrong instrument.
Godot AI over MCP gives the agent the running game
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is how an outside agent gets tools inside Godot. A server offers tools, your agent calls them, and the good ones close the loop the files leave open: run the game, read the error, look at the result, try again.
There are dozens of Godot MCP servers, from the free godot-mcp by Coding-Solo to the $19 GDAI MCP. Flockbay is one too. Turn on Another agent in the app's Connectors and Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent gets the open editor, the running game and Flockbay's world tools, free with a Flockbay account.
The Godot MCP guide has the setup line for each agent, and the roundup of Godot MCP servers compares a dozen of them with a verdict each.

Godot AI that plays the game before it says the game works
The oldest failure in AI game making is the confident report. "I added a double jump" arrives with code that compiles and a player that never leaves the ground. The model did not lie. It never pressed the key.
Since Flockbay 1.2.0, its AI plays the game while it works. It runs it, injects timed input events, captures the viewport and reads stdout and the errors, then says what it tried and what changed. The chat shows it in plain words, like "Played the game" and "Looked at the game", with the pictures it took. Your own agent gets the same tools.
Others do this too, in their own ways. GDAI MCP and Godot MCP Pro take screenshots and simulate input, godot-ai plays timed input sequences, and Ziva's Playtest Agent comes with its Pro and Ultra plans.
Where it breaks: a viewport capture and a log tell the model the game runs, not that it is good. It does not play a whole game through to a goal, return a pass or fail verdict, keep a regression suite or record video. Whether the jump feels right is still yours to judge. That loop, where you play it and say what is wrong, is the normal way this works, not a failure of it.
Godot AI for art and sound: generated, from a library, or built from shapes
Code is half a game. On your own AI, generation runs on your own keys: 3D models on Tripo, pictures on a key you add, sound on ElevenLabs, and the modeler builds rigged 3D models on your computer with no key at all. Generated pictures and 3D models follow the look written in your game's brief; sprites come back with a transparent background, and characters that will move come in a T-pose, ready to rig.
Without keys, Flockbay builds from a library of ready-made models, textures and sounds, or with Godot's own shapes, and says which it did. On one of Flockbay's optional plans, pictures and sound are generated on the plan's usage.
Art also comes from you. Anything you drop into the project folder is an ordinary Godot asset, and the AI can put it in a scene like any other.
Free Godot AI versus paid, as of 29 Sep 2026
Godot is free and MIT licensed, and so are the two most starred Godot MCP servers, Coding-Solo's godot-mcp and godot-ai. What costs money is the model. A coding agent runs on whatever plan you already pay for it. What is free in each AI game maker sets the free tiers side by side.
Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude plan, Pro or Max, or a ChatGPT sign-in on Plus or higher, in the app; your own agent over MCP; or your own API key for OpenAI or Anthropic. Every new account also gets a small free allowance called Demo, on a small, low-quality model, and the app says so above the message box.
Flockbay also has optional plans that run the AI for you; what Flockbay costs has the detail.
For comparison, GDAI MCP is $19 once and Godot MCP Pro $15 once, on top of your agent. Ziva runs from a free Hobby plan to $200 a month. Summer Engine's paid plans are $20, $60 and $200 a month, and its MCP connection is free.

Godot AI on an existing project
A coding agent or an MCP plugin works on any Godot project you have, and that is their great strength. Commit first, and check the plugin supports your Godot version: GDAI MCP wants 4.2 or later, Godot MCP Pro 4.4, godot-ai 4.7.
Flockbay opens an existing Godot 4 project too, with Open existing project. It plays, Flockbay's AI can write gameplay code for it, and your own agent can edit and run it through the editor. The builder's buttons, and the world tools behind them, work on a Flockbay world, and the AI asks before its first world tool makes your project one.
Two things to know first. The project opens on Flockbay's Godot 4.7.2, so a project from an older 4.x version meets a newer engine. And Flockbay asks before it adds anything: saying yes copies its editor add-on into the project and turns it on in project.godot, and export leaves the add-on out of the game you ship. Commit before you open it.
GDScript quality from Godot AI comes from checking, not from a bigger model
Most bad GDScript from AI is not bad code. It is code for a different project: a node path that does not exist, a signal with the wrong arguments, Godot 3 syntax in a Godot 4 project. A bigger model makes those mistakes less often. It does not stop making them, because the cause is that it cannot see.
So the fix is to let it see and check. When Flockbay's AI or your agent writes a script, it gets Godot's own parse error with the line. Then it can run the game and read the runtime errors with file, line and call stack. A mistake that used to reach you reaches the model first.
That is why a cheaper model can do real work when it can check itself. It breaks at taste: no check tells a model the level is boring. And the free Demo model is small. It shows how the loop works; it is not what you should build a game on.
You can read every line. It is GDScript in your project folder, in the files Godot itself uses. If you have never read any, start with what GDScript is.
What Godot itself ships, and where its community stands on AI
Godot ships no AI. The release notes for Godot 4.7 list no AI features and no MCP server; everything on this page is a plugin, a program or an app made by someone else.
On 30 Jun 2026 the Godot Foundation changed its contribution policy. Contributions to the engine may not come from autonomous AI agents or vibe coding, may not use AI to generate substantial pieces of code, and may not use AI-generated text between people. AI help is limited to menial things such as code completion, regular expressions and find and replace, it has to be disclosed in the pull request, and every pull request is reviewed and approved by a person. The Foundation's reason is arithmetic: making a pull request got cheaper and the number of them rose, while the people available to review them stayed the same.
The policy is about the engine's own code, not your game. It says nothing about AI in games made with Godot, and Godot's own Asset Library lists AI plugins such as Godot MCP Pro. What it does tell you is where many of the people who build Godot stand, which is worth knowing before you post an AI-built game in their spaces. The policy is linked in the table below.
What you are running
Flockbay is a free AI game maker built on Godot: a desktop app, on Windows today and Mac later, with the official Godot 4.7.2 inside, not a fork. There is nothing separate to install and no version mismatch to manage. When you press Play the game runs locally on your machine, at your framerate.
Your project is a normal Godot project in a folder on your disk. Nothing about it is a proprietary format, and if you want to open it in Godot directly, you can.
Building needs an internet connection because the AI, generation and world data come over the network, and it needs a free Flockbay account. Playing what you built needs neither.

When another kind of Godot AI is the better pick
You write code and have a large Godot project you are happy with: a coding agent on the repository, with a free MCP server such as godot-ai under it, keeps your editor and your workflow exactly as they are.
You want AI inside the editor you already use, on macOS or Linux, or in C#: Ziva does all three.
You want to build on a Mac today: Flockbay is Windows only for now, and Summer Engine runs on Windows and macOS.
Flockbay is the pick when you want the AI to build the whole game, code and world, in a real Godot 4 project you can open, read and change, with a builder in the editor for what you would rather drag, and your own agent connected free over MCP.
Questions
- Does Godot have built-in AI?
- No. The release notes for Godot 4.7 list no AI features. AI for Godot comes from coding agents, editor plugins, MCP servers and apps built on the engine.
- Is Flockbay a Godot plugin?
- Not only. Flockbay is a desktop app with the official Godot bundled inside. It opens your game in the Godot editor with its own add-on, which puts its chat in a dock and its builder around the editor's view. There is nothing to add to a Godot install of your own.
- What language does the AI write?
- GDScript, into your Godot project, where you can read it and change it.
- Which Godot version is it?
- The official Godot 4.7.2, bundled in the app. It is not a fork, and because it ships with the app there is no version mismatch to manage.
- Is there free AI for Godot?
- Yes. Godot MCP servers such as godot-mcp and godot-ai are free and run on the agent you already pay for. Flockbay is free on your own AI: your Claude or ChatGPT plan, your agent over MCP, or an API key, and every new account gets a small free Demo allowance.
- Does the Godot Foundation ban AI in games?
- No. Its 30 Jun 2026 contribution policy covers code contributed to the Godot engine itself. It says nothing about AI in games made with Godot.
- Can AI play-test a Godot game?
- Yes, up to a point. Flockbay's AI, and your own agent through Flockbay, can run the game, play keys and mouse into it, take pictures and read the errors. That tells it the game works. You still decide whether it is fun.
- Can I use Claude Code with Godot?
- Yes. Claude Code can edit a Godot project's files directly, and with an MCP server such as Flockbay's it can also run the game, look at it and play it. Connecting Claude Code to Flockbay is free.
- Does the game run in the cloud?
- No. It runs locally on your machine on the bundled Godot. There is no streaming and no cloud rendering.
- Can I open the project in Godot itself?
- Yes. It is a normal Godot project in a folder.
- Why not just use a chat assistant with Godot?
- You can, and it will write GDScript. What it cannot do is see your scene or run your game, so it guesses at your nodes and your engine version. Tools that let the model look and check are what remove the guessing.
