The best AI coding assistant for Godot is the one that knows Godot 4

Most AI coding assistants were trained on years of Godot 3 code, and Godot 4 changed a lot of it. The best assistant for Godot is the one that writes Godot 4 without being reminded. Here is how to test for that in ten minutes.

Why Godot is harder for AI than it looks

Godot 4 renamed and reworked much of Godot 3. KinematicBody became CharacterBody, export became the @export annotation, yield became await, and many signal and physics calls changed shape.

A model that learned mostly from older tutorials writes plausible code that no longer runs. That is the most common complaint from people using AI with Godot, and it is not a bug in Godot.

A ten-minute test for any assistant

Ask for a 2D character with CharacterBody2D that runs, jumps and uses coyote time. Check three things: it uses CharacterBody2D, it calls move_and_slide() with no arguments, and it uses @export for tunable values.

Then ask it to connect a signal from a button to a function. Godot 4 uses button.pressed.connect(_on_pressed). An assistant that writes the old string-based connect call is working from Godot 3 habits.

General assistants

GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code all work on a Godot project as files. Copilot has a free tier and Pro at $10 a month; Cursor has a free Hobby plan and paid plans from $20; Claude Code comes with Claude's paid plans from $20 a month (all read 26 Sep 2026).

They work best when you give them the Godot version in your first message and paste the error when something fails. They cannot see the running game unless you connect them to the editor.

Assistants that live in the editor

AI Assistant Hub is a free, open-source plugin that puts a chat in Godot's code editor and can use a local model through Ollama. Ziva is a paid Godot plugin with an agent that edits scenes and scripts; its Hobby plan includes $3 of AI use a month.

Editor plugins see which scene and script you are in, which removes a lot of copy and paste.

When you do not want to write code at all

If your aim is the game rather than the code, a tool built on Godot that writes the code for you may fit better. Flockbay is a desktop app with Godot 4.7.2 inside; its AI asks questions, writes a brief, and after you approve it writes GDScript into your project.

It can also be driven by your own agent over MCP, free, so you can keep the assistant you already like.

What no assistant fixes

Knowing whether the game is fun. Every assistant can write a jump; none can tell you the jump is too floaty. Play after every change and describe what you felt.
