What the template starts with
The hack and slash template starts with one room with a wave of enemies and a sword swing. That is the smallest version of the loop that defines the genre: enter a room, cut through the crowd, collect, move on.
What to change first
Fill the room and swing until the bodies at the edge take damage too. Then make one enemy survive long enough that you have to move. Loot that does not change the next swing can wait.
